We fundraise through a mixture of events, individual donations and selling African handicrafts - see below for details of our most recent fundraising events!
Annual Quiz Night - November 2016
Our second annual quiz night attracted even more keen quizzers this time, and raised over £1000 for Small Steps for Africa's projects in the process. Guests were treated to a delicious jacket potato supper and chocolate brownie dessert, while tackling topics as diverse as African flags, history and music. The 'Adults in Kew' team emerged victorious after a close battle.
The Brian Baker Memorial Fund
Set up in memory of SSFA founder Charlotte's late father, Brian, this fund comprises donations made in Brian's name by friends and family. Part of the money will go towards the vital renovation of the classroom at Akany Faravohitra, which will be dedicated in Brian's name. Brian was a great supporter of the work of Small Steps for Africa, so this is a fitting tribute to him and a way of continuing his legacy of generosity and kindness to others.
Second-Hand Sale - March 2016
We held our first second-hand sale at St Luke's House, Kew on Saturday 19th March. We were lucky to have a great variety of quality donations from many of our supporters, ranging from new items to children's clothes and toys, to books, DVDs, and of course, the ever-popular African handicrafts. We raised over £700 to support our new partnership with Akany Faravohitra home for vulnerable girls, with the money paying the wages for a staff member at the home.
Christmas Quiz Night - November 2015
Our Christmas Quiz Night was hosted by professional quizmaster Andrew Thomson and attended by over 50 people, who enjoyed an evening of festive fun, food and drink. SSFA director Charlotte gave a speech explaining the work we do and talked about her upcoming trip to Madagascar. We raised over £800, which will go towards our education projects in Madagascar.
Brighton College Home Clothes Day - June 2015
Half the proceeds from the Brighton College end of term Home Clothes Day were kindly donated to SSFA, providing us with a donation of £350 towards our education projects. We are grateful to the generosity of the pupils at Brighton College and the support of the chaplain, Father Robert.
St Luke's Church Quiz Night - March 2015
The annual Quiz
Night of St Luke's Church in Kew was held partly in aid of SSFA this year
and raised a fantastic £580. SSFA
Trustee, Jill Rzym
organised a brilliant raffle and director Charlotte gave a speech,
explaining the important work we do. We are
grateful to everyone who came along, as well as to St
Luke's Church Social Committee for choosing to support us this year.
Brighton College Cookie Sale - February 2015
On February 25th, 10 children from Fenwick House at Brighton College held a cookie sale at break time in aid of Small Steps for Africa. They raised £50 to go towards our education projects, and learned about the work of SSFA in their tutor period. A further cookie sale is planned for June.
London to Paris cycle ride - June 2014
In June 2014, SSFA trustee, Jill Rzym completed the incredible London to Paris cycle ride and raised around £1500 for Small Steps for Africa in the process. After months of training and fundraising, she was incredibly relieved to arrive safely, as seen in wonderful photo of her in front of the Eiffel Tower. Many thanks for all her efforts on our behalf - most of the money raised is going into our project partnership with 'Children of Madagascar.'
Afternoon Tea for Africa - September 2013
On Sunday 15th September, we hosted an afternoon tea at St Luke's Church, where Charlotte gave a presentation about her time in West Africa and Madagascar. Afterwards, guests were provided with a sumptuous afternoon tea and also had the opportunity to purchase a range of beautiful Malagasy handicrafts, brought back especially from Madagascar. Many thanks to everyone who attended or donated their time and money - we raised over £700 from the event.
Dressage for Madagascar - September 2013
On September 8th, we hosted our first fundraising event for the newly-launched 'Small Steps for Africa' - an equestrian dressage show at Woodington Training Centre in Romsey, Hampshire. Thanks to generosity of sponsors, volunteers, judges and the venue owners, we had an immensely successful day, raising over £800 to go towards our work with 'Children of Madagascar.' We hope to run the event again in 2015!
