ANKIZY GASY
For six years, Small Steps for Africa has worked in partnership with Ankizy Gasy, a small NGO based in the village of Ambohidratimo, to deliver a child sponsorship and home support programme.

We have facilitated the sponsorship of 50 children by generous supporters in the UK, as well as contributing to the construction of a new sixth form college, a breakfast programme and medical costs for children in the programme. Keep reading below to see our impact and read about Therezia's story.

Our Impact

Making Dreams Come True

Our work with our partner Ankizy Gasy is all about giving children the best opportunities to have a brighter future.

19-year-old Therezia has been supported by SSFA for eight years, since her final year of primary school. Her father is a school caretaker and her mother sells produce on the roadside. The family live hand to mouth, and without SSFA's support, Therezia would never have been able to access secondary education.

However, thanks to the support of generous sponsors through SSFA, Therezia was able to progress through all the stages of school, gaining her Baccalaureate leaving qualification in 2020. In December 2021, her hard work and persistence was rewarded when she was accepted to study nursing at Isparamed University in Antananarivo.

While waiting to start university, she also completed an extended French diploma qualification at the Alliance Francaise in Antananarivo. Given that most university teaching in Madagascar still takes place in French, this has proved hugely beneficial to Therezia.

She started her studies in December 2021 and hopes to eventually return to work in her community as a nurse. Her sponsors continue to support her university studies, and even travelled to meet her in Madagascar in 2016.
